Does Everyone Have an Egypt?

This is a question I received regarding this week's Leaving Egypt study:

"Concerning the nature of "Egypt" : Does everyone have an Egypt? I suspect many people would think about this and be unsure of what it might be."

What is Egypt? Maybe simply put, it's any created good that turns around and enslaves us. Egypt was a place where Israel was fruitful and multiplied - heartening back to Genesis - a place of refuge and safety, but where she found herself losing her God-given identity and missional purpose.

Egypt can be as very simple as a created good - sex, drink, food - twisted for self-gratifying purposes. Soon we are ruled by the iron fist of our vices. They have power over us. Any addict can relate.

Egypt can be a relationship, a workplace, a paycheck, a religion - something that sells us happiness and false security, but leaves us empty.

Egypt is a mindset, an entrenchment in Paul's "old self" or "old man," as he says, a mindset that illudes Spirit and Gospel, that rests in self-preservation and self-salvation.

Do you think everyone has an Egypt?

Are you begining to identify Egypts in your life?

Has this weeks study raised any questions for you?
